It's that time of the year... when we begin multiplication and division!
This email is to stress to you all the importance of working on multiplication fluency. It will become part of the homework for students to study multiplication facts each day. This will likely only be for maybe 10 minutes per day, but it's very important! You could work on them in the car, while you eat breakfast, while walking the dog, etc. You could have flashcards for your child to work with, or maybe you work with charts. As they get more fluent, asking them out loud for each fact is also very helpful!
In class we only practice multiplication facts a couple of times per week. They will have a fact buddy that they will work with every time we practice over the course of the year. They will help each other to become more fluent by learning what their partner can already do and what they need to work on.
Beginning the week of September 26, we will start taking multiplication fluency quizzes. Every student will start at 0s and 1s on the same day. After that, they will work through the quizzes at their own pace. We will take them 2 days per week. If they don't pass one, they take it again the next time. The goal is for students to at least get all the way through their 10s. If the 10s are mastered, though, they can do their 11s, 12s, and then move on to division facts.
WHY do we need fluency in these facts?? It will make math going further so much easier if they know their facts. Finding the area of 2D shapes will be much easier, working with fractions will be much easier, in general, math will be easier.
I will be putting games and online quizzes up in the multiplication/division tab on our class website!
